“Weathered, woodsy, complex, cozy.” These are the words emphasized in Sherwin-Williams’ promotional video for their 2017 “Color of the Year.” What color palette comes to your mind when you hear those words? Certainly not last year’s “Alabaster” white…

This year’s “Color of the Year” is “Poised Taupe SW 6039.” Part earthen brown, part conservative gray, Sherwin-Williams’ comments on its choice as: “both modern and classic, and a beautiful balance of warm and cool.” Essentially, Poised Taupe has been defined as “the new neutral.”

Since traditional neutrals have been monochromatic greys, there has been a recent shift in the design world to more complex taupes and browns, according to Sherwin-Williams. Influences include: “natural or organic materials, weathered and worn finishes and global cultural preferences,” denoting its worldly essence. House Beautiful observed that Poised Taupe, “definitely strikes the balance between bold and subtle.”

Floor Covering Weekly recently noted that the design world is seeing a trend in calmer, more peaceful spaces. Largely due to the fact that our lives are busier now than ever with technology and multi-tasking, people want to come home to a place that is the opposite of what they experience during the work day: Serenity. Colors have a huge impact on our mood -- a color like Poised Taupe has the potential to both inspire and pacify.

At Barry Carpet, we embrace Poised Taupe as a gender neutral hue with a polished modern twist. Sherwin-Williams has offered color pairing templates on their website that compliments Poised Taupe in any setting. Here are some examples below:

Wine & Taupe

Deep wine, purple and Poised Taupe bring warmth to the dark tones favored in 2017. Silver grey and intense teal provide balance and drama to this rich, mysterious palette.

Perhaps if you are re-decorating for fall, you may want to pair Poised Taupe with deeper wine and purple hues as in the Sherwin-Williams’ recommended palette: “Wine & Taupe.”

Plaid Is Back

By Jill

Plaid is back. You can expect to see plaid on just about everything lately. From fall runway collections to products even like faucet handles and mirror bases, traditional plaid has made a retro comeback. Not only has plaid returned in the form of textiles and fabrics, it also now has a strong presence in the carpet industry.

At Barry Carpet, we have a variety of new and classic plaid designs that come in different colors, patterns and quality. Bellbridge has introduced a classic navy and off-white plaid in their new Loft collection, suitable to the tastes of both yuppies and hipsters. Fabrica has created a contemporary take on the classic Scottish plaid in their new Burberry collection. With an elevated cross stitch, this new age plaid has a dimensional texture, perfect for a room that requires warmth and durability. Several other brands, such as Couristan, Karastan and Nourison, carry wool and nylon plaids in a wide range of colors to suit palettes for any living spaces.

Architectural Digest notes that “plaid fabrics and furnishings add colorful flair to a room and can balance out contemporary accents with a touch of time-honored style.” Although plaid is classic, it isn’t exclusively reserved for traditional decorating. Instagram famous interior design couple, Syd and Shea McGee, known as “Studio McGee,” share their take on modern plaid: “We’re seeing plaids and checks come back in a big way! From furniture and window treatments to floors, walls, and textiles, the possibilities of bringing this trend to life is endless.”

Cork Flooring A Healthy and Homey Choice

By Jill

At Barry Carpet, we are passionate about offering natural flooring products and explaining the incredible health benefits of the lines we carry. One of the wonderful sustainable options we have is cork flooring.  Along with being 100% biodegradable, cork flooring is elastic, durable, warm and soft underfoot.  Cork is also a natural thermal and acoustic insulator, which means rooms with cork flooring are naturally warm and especially quiet.

Cork is also praised for its remarkable shock absorption. According to Wicanders website, tests confirm that cork floors, compared to laminate floors, reduce walking sound up to 53%. Since cork provides fantastic insulation against sound and vibrations, it can be used beneath floating floor systems as a muffler and to help give the floors a more natural sound. It’s a perfect choice for multiple story buildings, where sound needs to be dampened from above.

Cork is impermeable to moisture with natural rot-resistant and fire-resistant properties. If burned accidentally, cork does not release any toxic gasses or chemicals, making it a healthy choice to surround yourself with.

Cork flooring is aesthetically versatile and available in tiles and planks in many styles, colors and sizes.

Helpful Tips for Installing Cork Flooring

  • While installing, remember to leave a 1/2 inch around the flooring perimeter so it can expand and contract appropriately.
  • Great performance under heavy furnishings.
  • Can be used as underlayment layer for ceramic, wood, or stone.
  • Don't worry about scratches, they will become part of the material pattern.
  • Seal every 5 years to keep its waterproof characteristics.

We carry a wide selection of cork flooring at Barry Carpet.

A few brands of cork flooring worth mentioning include:  Solida, Natural Cork, WeCork, Wicanders, Nova, Globus, and more.
